Some years ago I had a Ballard 4 1/2 Mid Range A1 in 40-63 and shot 17.5 - 18.0 grains of 4759 but with 330 gr bullets. That load should still be good for your 300 grainer.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

I just purchased a Ballard 4 1/2 40-63 and I will shoot that one as well as my J.P. Lower 40-63 Special Ballard.  I shoot black and PP almost exclusively.  However, I had a Ballard in 40-50 SS that I used with a 330 gr. Beveridge mold projectile with 19.6 of 4759.  Great accuracy.

I would imagine the same loads would work for a 40-60 Maynard with a 250 gr.
Yesterday I shot the Maynard with 20 gr 4198-250 gr bullet and 20 gr 4198-305 gr. Both were perfect at 100 yds but more kick with the larger bullet.
Aiming for a 200 meter load.
