single based powders and double based powders
Aug 18th, 2025 at 5:05pm

In a recent post, it was suggested that single based powders are better for vintage rifles than double based powders. Is that the general consensus?
Does anyone have a list of which powders are single based and which are double based? I did a google search with not much luck.
Thanks!

It is noted that double base powders are more sensitive to
ambient temperature swings

My 46th Edition of the Lyman Reloading Handbook ( I know, I should buy a newer one),  page 185 lists many powders and identifies most as either single or double base.  A newer edition will likely have more of the powders encountered today.

My newest Lyman catalog is a #42 Mike! Most of mine are even earlier Ideal manuals. Lots of good info newer manuals don't contain.

Most of the powders I use are "IMR Something" and the old books provide all I usually need.

A lot of my newer manuals don't even show cartridges as common as .32-40 or .38-55, or other common hyphenated cartridges. So I originally searched out old Ideal manuals when they weren't collectible and sold for $5 at gun shows. So much data for cartridges we all enjoy, and it gave me a good start back 50 years ago.

I had a Lyman #1 manual in my hand on Saturday with intentions of buying it. I got distracted by something shiny, set it down to look at the shiny object and forgot about the book. Didn't realize it until I had drove a half an hour. It's at the reloading store in St. Charles, MO if anyone lives in the area and wants it.

IF I'm not mistaken, single based powders are based on nitrocellulose and double based powders are that plus nitroglycerin.  I would think that would affect the rate of burning and the SHAPE of the pressure curves.
