38-40 Remington dies

Put myself on the waiting list this morning at CH tool for a set of dies.  I am number four on the wait list. Gentleman told me they want another 1-2 backorders and that would get the wait time down to around six months.  No commitment to buy, but if you are looking for a set or think you may need one, please call and order and maybe we can get a run made sooner rather than later. Thank you

Rifleman,
RCBS still has some of there Cowboy three die 38-40win sets available with roll crimp, the SKU#35651 and UPC#076683356512. The price is $77.99 for the three die set. In stock now Monday 8/18/25 at 11:52 est.

At the RCBS website, be sure to search the SKU or UPC because a general cowboy search will show they are out of stock but they are not.

Good Luck

This is for 38-40WIN, sorry if this is not useful.

The 38-40 Remington Hepburn cartridge is a shortened version of the popular for BPCR 38-50 Remington Hepburn. Remington could mark the barrels for the 38-40 as 38 1 3/4 vs 38 2 1/4 for the 38-50. The earliest Remington references had a couple of other names for it like cartridges for the so-and-so rifle. The 30-40 Krag was actually based on the 38-50 brass and now in a reversal provides the donor to make 38-50/38-40 Remington Hepburn cartridges. 38-50 Remington Hepburn reloading dies have been used by some to reload 38-40 Remington Hepburn cartridges but sometimes require hammering the formed 38-40 brass fully into the 38-50 sizing die and knocking it out to get it to chamber in some rifles.

I have a set of RCBS 38/50 Remington dies. So far I havent been able to get a cut down 303 british brass to chamber after forcing it all the way into the FL die.  I could try 30/40 brass. I also still want 38/40 dies and perhaps others do too.

And no, this isnt the same cartridge as the 38/40 Winchester

I was on the wait list for months. Based on the post earlier this morning I called, verified that I was #1, for one set, and after asking about what it would take to get it going, that being they needed one more, I changed my order to two and paid for them.
Now they should be out in 6-10 months. Who knows, maybe sooner.

I ended up grinding about 3/16 of an inch off of my 38-50 dies to get them to chamber. Then the light bulb went on and I tried sizing some in my 40-70 sharps straight dies and it reduced them right at the base and now they go in easily.
