Accurate 2495 ignition issues

Using data posted on the forum, I loaded a few 50-70 brass with 2495 under a 420 gr bullet. I tried pistol primers with the bullet getting stuck just starting down the bore, so I tried a Magnum Rifle witb similar results.

The powder came from a good friend, it shows no signs of deterioration. No funny colors or odor, but it clearly unburnt in the bore witb many being a brownish color. Price sticker on the powder is $11.99

The Magnum Rifle Primers are new, so I'm thinking bad powder, Your thoughts?

I don’t like Accurate 2495.  It has always seemed temperature and position sensitive to me.  Temperature shouldn’t be a problem this time of year.

A can priced $11.99 is probably old enough to toss out even without signs of deterioration.

I have done duplex loads in the 45/70, using 4831, with 296 as a priming charge. I worked pretty well. With a 41 gr bullet, the charge was 15 gr 296/27.5 gr 4831. 4 fps SD and a .6 5 shot group @ 100. So, excellent ignition and burning.

So, my point is to try a primer charge at least 5.0 gr of 4759, 4227, 296/H110, Enforcer/4100 or like burning speed powder. Above 5.0 gr, reduce the main charge at 2.0 or more gr per primer.

Powder rarely goes bad, kept sealed, in dry storage. We are still shooting WWII powder, in this sport.

Use pistol primers and watch your primer for signs of pressure.

I have plenty of 296 to toy with duplex loads, I might give that a try in the next day or two.

My daughter has requested that I go to St. Louis with her on Saturday, there are a few options in the city to pick up a fresh pound of 2495.

I have always heard powder rarely went bad and I honestly believe that to be true. I lost some 4350 that I purchased in bulk from a commercial reloader. You bring your containers, he filled then back up while weighing them on a scale. The powder had clear signs of going bad.. the plastic lid deteriorated and turned white, the powder smelled very acidic. I question if it was stored correctly at the commercial reloader's facility, it could easily have drawn moisture without climate control in the high humidity of the midwest.

If you are having trouble with that powder why not buy something else when you go on the weekender with your daughter?
Enjoy the time with her. Smiley

I like the idea of the low pressure the 2495 loads produce. She is an adult, we are meeting up for some wedding table stuff for her upcoming wedding, plus she will want to go the the BassPro and Cabela's ( and for me; Full Circle Reloading is only a block down from BassPro). I won't make her suffer and go to the Lewis and Clark boat dock a 3rd time.  Grin

I was able to find a pound of powder from a local fellow. A fair amount of dust was on the bottle and the price sticker was updated a time or two, none the less...it came home with me.

Loaded them up like before with the same bullet, the same charge using the new can of powder and Magnum Pistol Primers. The loads fired, none got stuck in tne barrel, all hit the steel target firmly. I feel safe loading up a few, I will chronograph those rounds.
