I have done duplex loads in the 45/70, using 4831, with 296 as a priming charge. I worked pretty well. With a 41 gr bullet, the charge was 15 gr 296/27.5 gr 4831. 4 fps SD and a .6 5 shot group @ 100. So, excellent ignition and burning.
So, my point is to try a primer charge at least 5.0 gr of 4759, 4227, 296/H110, Enforcer/4100 or like burning speed powder. Above 5.0 gr, reduce the main charge at 2.0 or more gr per primer.
Powder rarely goes bad, kept sealed, in dry storage. We are still shooting WWII powder, in this sport.
Use pistol primers and watch your primer for signs of pressure.
I have plenty of 296 to toy with duplex loads, I might give that a try in the next day or two.
My daughter has requested that I go to St. Louis with her on Saturday, there are a few options in the city to pick up a fresh pound of 2495.
I have always heard powder rarely went bad and I honestly believe that to be true. I lost some 4350 that I purchased in bulk from a commercial reloader. You bring your containers, he filled then back up while weighing them on a scale. The powder had clear signs of going bad.. the plastic lid deteriorated and turned white, the powder smelled very acidic. I question if it was stored correctly at the commercial reloader's facility, it could easily have drawn moisture without climate control in the high humidity of the midwest.
