Browning 78

I recently purchased a Browning 78 and was looking for instructions on how to disassemble it. I am not new to single shots.  I currently own six that I can work on with no issues, including a C Sharps 1885, but the 78 is totally different and the internet is full of horror stories of springs flying, impossible to reassemble, etc. What brought me to this forum was a Google search found that someone had posted the B78 Field Service Manual on here in 2013 but it is no longer accessible. Repro owners manuals are available but don't contain the needed info. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well I have had them apart a dozen times maybe. Theyre not that bad. How far down do you want to take it?

I want the info to be able to completely disassemble if necessary for repairs or deep cleaning down the road. It is in perfect working order as far as I can tell. I just bought it yesterday and am waiting for the scope I ordered to arrive so I haven't fired it yet. It is also 51 yrs old . I plan on using it for hunting and keeping it forever so just want the info on hand before I have a problem. I've wanted one of these since I first laid eyes on one back in 76 but the price was well out of a 12 year old's budget. lol. Thanks

Which one? The original B78, or the recent Browning 78? They are similar in construction, but NOT identical. The ASSRA archives have the service manual for the B78. I don't know if there is one for the Browning 78.

The manufacture date is 12 of 74 made by Miroku. I tried looking for it but could not find it but I'm not that computer savy. Thanks

My hat is off to anybody who can manipulate the Rube Goldberg designed innards of a B78. I did once, and swore that I'd never do it again (after swearing vociferously for three evenings whilst attempting it). Spoken as someone who's made a living making/repairing scientific apparatuses. With my current Miroku's I worship at the altar of spray cleaners/lubes.

Going off memory…
Pull the two phillips buttpad screws
Remove forearm screws and forearm
Pull stock bolt and remove stock
Lower lever
Drift pin out of lower block
Remove hammer, springs and struts while keeping pressure on underside of hammer
Trigger group should pull out of its mortise as one unit
If you want to pull breachblock out, it requires removing ejector assembly from along barrel and drifting out lever pin

Reverse order to assemble, trickiest part being the alignment of struts. Just get them started on the one end and it will take some serious thumb strength to compress the springs while lining up for the pin in the block.

Did you get the factory mounts and rings with rifle? Is it the ‘light’ round barrel or the heavier one drilled for scope blocks?

The only source I’m aware of for disassembly and assembly instructions for the B-78 is Browning’s Field Service Manual, which is available from ASSRA's Archival Library.  Contact: ASSRA Archives & Library, 800 Wisconsin St. Suite 104; Mail Box 68 Building F13, Eau Claire, WI 54703-3613.  Phone: 608-628-0536, Email: archives@assra.com.  Ask for any other documents on the B-78 along with the Field Service Manual.  ASSRA membership is not required, but you may be required to pay a small fee for the documents and shipping.

I hope the above helps.

Willis,

Details on the recent Browning 78.  In 2010 Browning introduced a limited quantity of a High Wall rifle in several modern smokeless calibers.  Called a B78 Sporter, the rifle actually has an 1885 High Wall receiver & action.  Browning’s justification in calling it a B78 Sporter is based on the features and contours of the stock, forearm and barrel, which are very similar to the original B-78.  I personally have a problem with Browning’s nomenclature since many buyers will incorrectly assume the rifle is a reintroduction of the original B-78, or be confused if disassembly or repair is required.  The serial numbers of the rifles adhere to the following format (xxxxxZM373), which is Browning’s standard format consisting of a 5-digit number followed by the 2-character manufacturing date code with a 3-digit model identifier.
