32 Miller Short vs 32-20 CPA vs Other 32 Cal

I have become increasingly interested in rifle cast bullet accuracy and shooting (maybe goes with maturing age?). I have a CPA rifle in 38-55 that I use for informal "bench buffalo" matches. I also have a Ballard Schuetzen rifle in 8.15x46R with a CPA Douglas barrel. I have a itch for another 32 cal and have a new CPA rifle ordered and want to confirm my chamber choice. I thought I was settled on 32-20 CPA but I could be easily persuaded to go with something else. I think I would like the option of shooting fixed ammo or breech seating. You folks with a lot of years in this please give me some guidance.

32/20 cases, are on the weak side. Very weak if you use Winchester cases and the 32/20 doesn't have enough case capacity for fixed ammo, with heavy bullets.

Minimum capacity for fixed, would be at least the 357 Max case. You could get about 16/1700 fps out of a 200 gr bullet.

A better fixed chamber, would be a 32/40, with a straight neck, freebore and a slow lead. It will still shoot BSed, with the same accuracy and loads as the std 32/40. You can get at least 1900 fps with that case and a 200 gr bullet.

I decided on 32-40. It seems to be the most versatile with the long neck and generous case capacity. I plan to make cases using the long Starline 38-55 brass. I will anneal it from the start because it is normally pretty hard as delivered. Thanks to those that responded to my inquiry.

Just curious since I have just fired 100 32-40 rounds, 50 black powder and 50 smokeless in the past 24 hours all 32-40 cases, why you want to form it from 38-55. Always willing to learn. 😂

For those not fortunate enough to have a stash of .32-40 brass, making it out of .38-55 brass is an easy and economical alternative to searching and paying for .32-40 brass.

Who knows when 32-40 Brass will be made again by Winchester or whomever. Can't even find 38-55 except Starline. Hopefully it will not be too thin. I use it in 38-55 with no issues. I do anneal it every firing.
