Cartridges listed in the Win. 1916 Catalog

I was scanning the hardbound facsimile of the 1916 Winchester catalog prior to shipping it to a buyer.  A couple of things I found interesting.  The production of 1885 High Wall & Low Walls have been reported to cease sometime between 1913 & 1918, depending on who you read.  It is listed in the catalog but not as the 1885, it's called the Winchester Single Shot Rifle.  Also, the listing of black powder cartridges outnumbers the list of smokeless cartridges for both rimfire & centerfire.

There is something interesting there. For example, the weight of a case of 1000 rounds of black powder loaded 43 Spanish is listed at 98 pounds but for a 1000 smokeless it's 100 pounds?

Something screwy there. The BP load is a 375 gr. bullet and the smokeless is a 300 gr. bullet. How 1000 with 375 gr. bullets can be lighter than the same with 300 gr. is beyond me.

Vall, I'm not sure that - means the same weight as the one before it (look at the 405s in the 45-70). But, even if the smokeless is loaded with the same 375 grain ones as the black it would mean that the smokeless is carrying 89 grains of powder to the black's 75.

The .43 spanish BP says 75 grs. powder and 375 gr. "bull." bullet.
The .43 Spanish smokeless says 300 for the .405 and - for the .43 Mauser and .43 Spanish. I assume that meant all three were 300 gr. bullets? But even there there's 7 lbs. difference between the .43 Mauser and .43 Spanish with both smokeless loads. Not sure how they get that?

What a great post!

Very interesting!

I wonder if the weight discrepancies would be different packaging?

But it sure is neat that more were offered in black powder than smokeless in 1916

Black powder. Did they have the grades we have today? 1, 1 1/2, 2, 3, cartridge? In today’s powder grades what would 40 gr be?

Brings to mind the James Grant quote:

“I was to find out later that a lot of nice things had disappeared after WWI.”
