I shot 19.6 gr of 4759 in my 40-50 SS Ballard.  I used IMR 4198 exclusively in my BPE double rifles with great success.  I used Ross Seyfried's 40% rule for 4198.

Just wanted to say thank you for the encouragement to employ careful smokeless loads in some of my old iron. This No. 16 just came to me. It had many mechanical issues which I have resolved by tuning and making new parts.

It was supposed to have been chambered for .25 Stevens rimfire, but had been re-cut to .25-20 WCF. After seeking some wisdom in another thread, I ordered an NOE mold dropping a 63 grain plain base bullet.

I shot it today to establish zero with the MVA B5 scope I installed. What a pleasant experience! The load was 4.0 Unique, and I think it wants to shoot. I must admit it was very nice not to have to deprime and clean the cases immediately.

The bore produced a host of very black patches and some lead flakes. Who knows when it was cleaned before today? I look forward to more careful load development and more delightful range sessions with this old beastie. Thank you gentlemen!

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!
