That's from a period when scheutzen rifles were larger calibers and .38 and .40 were more common. Earlier in ML scheutzen those were the two most popular calibers used, so it transferred over to cartridge rifles. I have two Rigby Ballard scheutzen rifles that are both in .40-63 Everlasting. I thought that was a strange choice until a friend straightened me out about the history.
