A W Peterson's Win HW
Aug 2nd, 2025 at 10:00pm
Print Post
On the cover of the latest SSRJ is a photo of AW Peterson holding a Winchester HW with a straight grip shotgun buttstock. Does anyone know the actual details of this rifle (chambering etc.)? It appears to have a round barrel (No.2?), a standard trigger and a Lyman No. 15 tang sight. I can't make out the front sight.
I really like the look of this rifle & plan to make up a copy of  it so any details would be a great help. Thanks.

It reminds Me of a rifle Goergen had a few years ago. That rifle was a 38/72.

- It has a full round barrel.
- shotgun buttstock
- looks like a plain trigger
- nice case-colored action!
- It's hard to make out the front sight ... is it a tall blade or a narrow globe sight? The rear sight is a Lyman No. 15 wind-gauge tang sight. This model tang sight first appeared int he Lyman 1889 catalog.

Weren't those the Lyman sights that didn't fold down Joe?

There is an A.W. Peterson Gun Shop in Tavares Florida it may be under Mount Dora Fl. They have a small museum section about Mr. Peterson.

AW Peterson was one of the really great Denver gunsmiths! He and Schoyen both worked at Carlos Gove's Denver Armory until Gove retired and sold the shop to Schoyen. Then Peterson went to work with Schoyen as a partner. Both were Swedish immigrants that were already very capable gunsmiths when Gove hired them, and seems they got along well, although quite different personalities.
I have a lot of affection for the work both Schoyen and Peterson accomplished during their lives as custom gun makers. A lot of talent between the two.

If memory serves me, Peterson came to the US (Chicago) as a watchmaker.

You can learn more about Peterson in the last two journals to help with your memory, but hopefully not necessary.

Not sure how far apart Schoyen and Peterson times were when they immigrated to the US, but both first landed in Chicago, and then migrated out West to Denver. I don't have dates, but I believe John Dutcher said Schoyen arrived in Chicago around 1852 if I recall right? Gove opened his shop in  Denver in 1860, so when Schoyen arrived in Denver both were fairly new to Denver. Not sure when AW Peterson arrived in either place?

Just curious since I've seen a couple of these Petersen rifles and wonder is the pecker headed forearm a distinct design of his ? There are many others similar but not quite the same

I wouldn't call it "pecker headed" myself, but the stock maker for Schoyen & Peterson was Henry Simmons, and most (not all) rifles he stocked had that shape on the forearm. My Peterson .22LR doesn't, but it might also have been restocked in recent years as the stocks look like new.

It was just a term I heard amongst some shooters in New England. So if you on the other side haven't heard it then it's no doubt a regional thing. I can however understand it's origin anatomically

The forend on my 30 Wesson Ballard is even more phallus shaped.  I keep it that way to intimidate my competitors.

It's not that uncommon, when I was teaching my gunmaking class several students decided that was the shape of the schnable going on their forends, one can only guess where that went.  And they hadn't conspired before coming up with their ideas either, they claimed it was natural thoughts.  Freudian?

My one Peterson Ballard has a plain real simple schnable on it. (kind of a lame photo of it)

I really didn't think my remark would take off like this. Val provided the info I was interested in so I figured that was it. Wrong. It's always been the case in my life where moving around to different locations the locals have names and terms for things an outsider must eventually learn to sound like he belongs.

No worries boys....it's been entertaining  Smiley.
Work on my copy of the rifle in the original photo is progressing well. I located a HW with a straight shotgun butt & a #2 round barrel that was shot out & begging for a reline. Just have to figure out what cartridge to go with.

Spud,
There are some barrel blanks on eBay in 50 BMG.  I will make you a free breech seater if you put one on your highwall Smiley

Black, I built a highwall with casting set (8620 steel) using a 50 cal machine gun barrel cut to 30" cut full octagon ( 1.375" at reciever) then chambered to 510 nitro express (50-140 case). Rifle weighed 20 lbs. Kicked like he'll with 500 grain bullet around 2400 fps. Don't shoot it a lot!

My shootin buddies arm after the one time the butt plate missed his shoulder pad. 50-90 -90gr Swiss 1 1/2 under a 650 gr bullet. His scores went way down after the hit.
