Hard rubber tips were standard on the higher grade "B" Most Creedmoor Hepburns have low serial numbers as the long-range shooting was dying out by 1880, about the time they were introduced. I believe the action was designed for long-range competition. Tony has a strange one for sale, it is chambered for the .30-40 Krag and is the only one, in that caliber, I have ever heard of.

One step closer…

This morning I cold called the auction house that handled Jack Appels collection 36 years ago. The man himself, Richard Oliver, returned my call. He is 80 years old and was the auctioneer that day.

He was pretty surprised to hear what I was asking of him but asked for the details and my information and said he would start looking for the records of that day.

Way more help than I expected!

That's a rare thing these days with auction houses. They either don't want to, or give the excuse they can't reveal details. I've even offered to send them a stamped return address envelope they could simply write in a buyer's info and drop it in the mail to him, but they refused.
You're another step closer!

I told him I understood his position in regards to privacy but hoped if he found the records all i would ask is that he pass on my info to them.  Better than nothing and way more than I expected

Interesting posts.

I may have missed in the reading of this, but did you get the chance to ask the EBay seller of the buttstock where they got it from and what they might know?

Yes I did ask. He found it at a flea market in Ohio. And he didnt know anything beyond that. Not even what the stock was for until he did some research.

At least it narrows it down to Ohio where either the gun was, or where the stock got removed.
