A new addition to my single shots.

I was visiting a some what local gun shop Friday and spotted this new arrival.
It is a Stevens 44 in 25-20 Winchester.  A well taken care of rifle with a Lyman # 1 tang sight and a Lyman #5 front sight.
Over all a very nice find.
I hope to get it to the range tomorrow morning!

Oldbee, my 44 is also just marked 25-20 but it is a 25-20 SS. The original 25-20 was the Stevens (the SS) with a case length of 1.63 inches and a base diameter of .315 inches. The later 25-20 WCF has a listed case length of 1.33 and a base diameter of .349. I have to assume that you have checked the chamber out for the WCF. It would seem that running a WCF reamer into an SS chamber would end up with a neck .30 longer than the WCF case giving a long freebore.

My Stevens 44 has a relined bbl.  The dimensions I obtained match a 25-20 WCF cartridge.
One would think a 25-20 cartridge would not fit into a 25-20ss chamber with the difference (.030") in the rim and base measurements.

Back from the range this morning.  The 25-20 performed well, a rectangular group about 2 1/2"to the right.  Not to bad for these old eyes and loads not regulated to it.  I figured it was off to one side or the other.  When I took off the rear sight to clean it, it had a paper shim under it.  Now I have to remember what side it was on!

OK, a lined barrel wasn't mentioned. A very nice looking rifle. Have fun! Actually, the one I have had been tagged by the dealer as a 25-20 WCF. In looking it over I looked at the chamber and told the dealer it wasn't a WCF and had him try to get a round in it to prove it. So I got a discount and the SS I really wanted! Here's my 44/45. Its 2 favorite loads so far are the lightweight Lyman 257420 with 6.8 grains of H108 and the heavier Lyman 457463 Loverin with 6.2 grains of H108.

Isn't it nice when things work out like that?

My first Rolling Block Sporting Rifle was marked "44S" on the barrel and the gun shop didn't know what it was, and told me everything they tried in the chamber just fell in. It was cheap since they didn't think it could ever be fired with "no ammo available". It was of course .44-77BN and didn't take long to get it fed and shooting.

You are right, I apologize for not mentioning the relined bbl.

I have a Winchester model 53 in 25-20 Win, so I was happy to find the Stevens in the same caliber.  A person can shoot it for hours and not have negative effects from the recoil.  I still like to shoot my 45-70 and 40-65 but a break is needed at times.

Those 53s are so sweet! I have the Browning in 32-20 to go with my 44 1/2.

Don't forget the Remington 25 pump, in 25/20.

Excellent and very fast handling.

Nifty rifles. Have had them in 25-20 and 32-20, accurate and smooth as silk. Redfield made a really nice sight for them that mounted with the two top wrist mounting screws.
