A couple of months ago I found out that both on my match 32-40 high walls had lose pins. One fell out either the fly and the other was 1/2 way out. First time in 30 years I ever had that issue.  The MVA pin is very short as I remember. I think I have one of you need it.

I put my rifle with the barrel pointing left and the receiver lying flat in my padded vice. I grab the lever with my left hand with my middle finger through it and my thumb opposed on the outside. As I pull down on the lever, I also pull the lever hard left and as it comes out of the receiver the link clears something and you'll feel the lever move slightly left. This releases the hammer so you can push it forward all the way to the back face of the breach block. Slowly continue to slide the breech block out a little more and you'll feel something bump or kind of hang up. Now slide the breech block back in just a smidge and pull the front trigger and begin sliding it back out. You might have to try that a couple times to get clear whatever it hangs up on. Make sure you're pushing the hammer all the way against the breech block with your right thumb at the same time, keeping it tight against the breech block.  Keep pulling left on the lever while doing all this. Good luck. Hard to explain but I'll comes with a touch and a little luck.

Bob, you're describing the same thing that I am.  It's the firing pin retractor.

Jack,  It doesn't hang up on the firing pin, it keeps the hammer back so it won't clear.  Manipulating the lever/trigger like Bob described rearranges that link so that the hammer will move forward slightly and clear.  Like he said, hard to explain, but once you figure out how to do it, it's easy.  I had a high wall I couldn't disassemble years ago, that taught me that trick.

I had to pull my MVA block recently. all went well until reassembly.  The designer of the firing pin insertion process should get a kick to the berries if I could time travel  Angry
Back at the range every thing including DSTs worked fine; however upon packing up my hammer fly was found on the bench.  Action and trigger set is fine.  Do I need to put it back in - no sign if the pin.

Just the opposite happened to me on Saturday. Got home after a match to clean my rifle, opened the action and heard something hit the floor. Found the pin but  no fly.

I have removed breech blocks hundreds of times from standard, SST and CCDST high walls by just pulling the block out of the bottom while sometimes playing with the trigger to back the sear off and also getting past the extractor. My new DST high wall will not let me do that. I have to back out the lower tang to remove the block. Is this normal?

Thanks

Jack

So what did you find out about the breech block problem? Were you able to get it out without pulling the tang?

I was not able to remove it.  The hammer was ALL the way forward and the extractor loose.  The hammer is definitely hitting the lower tang.  It hits in the area shown.

That seems like the same place mine hit too Jack.  That's why I wondered if when Winchester sold those replacement tangs maybe they had to be hand fit?

That may be the case. I am going to live with it since the bottom of the lever would have a larger gap if I removed metal from the lower tang.
