Nah! Ballards will never die. Ron Heilman used to shoot a Ballard Pacific 32-40 with a 36 inch Remington barrel. It was a deluxe rifle with fancy feathered wood. I was always tempted to talk him out of it but never did because it had a big ole huge dovetail cut right in the middle of the receiver ring. You couldn't tell it from a factory Pacific except the barrel was Remington.

I agree with ya, them'r some nifty rifles. I'd like to know some about the unusual trigger guard/grip/lever that last one sports. In the bewildering number of styles seen that one is unique. Pray tell what you know of it.

On the advice of a guy in the shop at Shiloh I once ordered a 34 inch barrel instead of a heavier 30 inch at the same weight. I could never get that rifle to shoot for s++t and finally slugged it. The last 4 inches were trombone shaped. Shiloh would not make it right. Ended up sending it to a big name shop for shortening and sight re-installation. Was returned with visible daylight in the dovetail. Went back and they had to make a new sight to fit the oversize dovetail. Wanted me to pay for their crappy work and the new sight they had to make! Of course I did not do that. Had another big name shop want me to pay for a barrel I sent them for installation. After taking a year to put it in they somehow forgot I sent them the custom taper octagon to begin with. Although most of the shops I have dealt with have been reputable there are others "that bear watching".

I agree with Wes! If you'd just bought a fine old Ballard rifle you'd never have any trouble with 34" barrels!  Those Sharps rifles always have trouble with longer barrels!

Joe's Ballards always have all sorts of cool options!

Long story on that lever and rifle Pat. I'll write something up when I get time. Incredible where some of these old rifles have been and who owned them.

I look forward to the tale of that Ballard, Joe.
