is it a 40-50 straight or bottle neck? The straight I beleave can be made from 30-40  brass, the BN is made from necked down, shortened 45-70 brass. Both are fine cartridges, low recoil and accurate with the right bullets and a case full of black powder.

Many of the 40-"50's were made in what was called a short range target rifle rather than a mid-range or long range target rifle. Nice little rifles. Like somebody already said, pictures, pictures.

Ballards may be weaker,

I make .40-50 SS brass from either .303 British or .30-40 Krag brass, whichever is cheapest. It's a wonderful smokeless powder cartridge, and makes the .40-50SS a good midrange cartridge with smokeless loads.

Ken waters did one of his Pet Loads articles on the .40-50 Sharps BN using a Borchardt  Hunter's rifle (26" round barrel). It is in the May 1993 Handloader magazine but also appears in his Pet Loads book. Plenty of good info.

Hopefully this works. Did I read somewhere that I need to post 10 messages before I can post pics?
Guess we'll see.....
