Winchester Serial Numbers

Did Winchester ever put matching numbers on the buttstock and receiver?  My new rifle has no number on the receiver but 3787 on the stock and the butt plate. That number would put it as being made in 1886.  The breech block is probably not that old as it has the screw instead of the cross pin.

Thanks

Jack

You've seen more than I have, but all I've ever seen just had the serial number on the lower tang outside, and a work order number on the side of both upper and lower tangs. Have you had the stock off yet to check the left side of the tangs for numbers, X's, and code letters?

I have had the stock off.  The only markings on the lower tang are shown in the rifle photos thread.  I have a couple where the serial number on the lower tang has been worn off.

Just went back to look at the Rifle Photos thread, and no pictures of the tangs with the stock off? I see others of the bottom of the barrel.

This photo is the inside top of the lower tang.  I also just found the letter A on the receiver face

My Special Sporting had a #830 on the left side of top and bottom tangs. Also a "ST" for the set trigger, and XXX for the wood grade. The last two were only on the lower tang.
