1863 Sharps Carbine

New to the group, getting my feet wet in the antique firearms world.  I have the opportunity to pick up a 1863 Sharps Carbine.  Converted to center fire.  But a lot of info I have come across has my head spinning.  I'm under the impression from "the internet" that converted Sharps would have a 3-land/groove barrel. mind still has 6 lands 6 grooves.    No marking what so ever on caliber. I know percussion Sharps were .52 caliber. Converted was most likely a 50-70 but wasn't there other calibers as well??? last but not least...... need help on serial number history: S/N is C39413 which should make it #139,413.

Can't do a thing for you as I am not that versed in the Sharps conversions but I am sure someone will be along to help. Welcome to the forum. Lots of good information and knowledge here. Good folks to associate with...

Vern, that is a pretty high serial number on your rifle and should get it into the 1869 model range. It may not be a conversion at all and it's just been rebarreled. Measure the thickness of your lock plate. Does the lock plate have a vertical slot cut in it that is visible when you cock the hammer?  If so that was for a primer system and would indicate that it is a percussion lock that was converted. Does the front of the receiver have a rounded shape or more of a convex curved shape?  How is the lock plate labeled? Does the serial number run across the receiver or does it run the length of the tang? Is there a sling bar on the left side or remnants of a sling bar with a plate inlet, into the side of the stock ? As always, pictures, pictures!!

Not all conversions were relined to a .515 3 groove bore. There was a certain spec for how much wear was allowed before lining the barrel. I think that was .522”. So if the rifle was sent back to Sharps for conversion, and it had a pristine 52 caliber bore, it was simply chambered and the conversion to the firing system completed.

Check your bore size as the original barrels were 6 groove.

it is a conversion as it still has the paper disk primer dispenser on it, but the block has been converted to firing pin and the removal of the cap nipple.

Make a chamber cast?

How do we know that humanity isn't just a race of tame primates, domesticated by dogs to serve their purposes?

New model was the 63 and the 104 was probably the company rack number.
