Stevens 44 Model 47 32-40

For sale is an original Stevens 44, Model 47, in 32-40 with the lugged hammer for black powder loads. The barrel is 28 inches and is a half octagon/half round and about 1 inch in diameter. The receiver is case colored and the barrel is blue with plum brown spotting. Comes with an aluminum #3 Swiss buttplate and all the parts, including extra parts pictured. Rear sight is original and adjustable for both windage and elevation and the front sight is a new MVA with 12 inserts. The buttstock and forend were purchased new from CPA.

I purchased the action/barrel and the parts to rebuild the rifle to the original specifications of the Model 47. I had the barrel and action gone over by gunsmith John King, of Kila, MT., and he replaced parts, as needed. I have a copy of his invoice showing the work he performed. At one time, someone in the past cut a dovetail for a rear sight in the barrel and put two holes in the bottom of the barrel for a palm rest. These holes and dovetail have been filled. The rifle still needs the stocks installed, finished and the buttplate fitted.

This is an early model 44 with the 7 O’clock extractor. Research reveals that the rifle was probably made around 1895 or 1896. Selling as I have gone in another direction with my rifles.

Will ship for $1200 and directly to the buyer as it was made before 1898. No electronic payments or trades. Personal checks, bank checks and USPS MO only. Contact me with any questions and thanks for looking.

Jerry

Being new at this, what's a lugged hammer and why is it necessary for BP?

Lugged hammers are used on the larger rounds.  The 44 action is relatively weak, like the Ballards, and Stevens included a lugged hammer to support the larger rounds.  You can still only use target loads with the action and lugged hammer.  Hope that helps.

With all the parts Jerry has shown, that should make a nice rifle with little work other than finishing the stock and assembling the rifle.

I have a very nice Model 47 or I would get this gun.
