Cartridge/bullet for 1/17 twist B. Darr Barrel

I have a new,.38 (.375") heavy (1.13" to 1.08") 30" barrel with a 1-17 twist. What cartridge , bullet combination would work well at 200 yards? as mentioned, it's a Barry Darr barrel. I have a high wall action with set trigger to compliment the barrel. Target work only.

Thanks In Advance For Suggestions

So, HG, it's a 38-40 Rem or a 38-45 Ballard or a Bullard or a 38-50 Remington Hepburn or what;-) I think the question is what cartridge are you using?

I think he is asking what cartridge would work with his barrel action combo.

Yes, new and unchambered barrel with slow twist. What is practical for 200 yard target work or is that not going to work with 1-17 twist.

Ah, so it's a to-do with a relatively slow twist. Classic for 200 would be 38-55, wouldn't it?

Yes, 38-55. Back when the 38-55 ruled the ranges they were 18 twist and that was considered fast.

I also have a Darr barrel 18 twist that knocks rams over at 500 meters. Also on a Winchester 1885.  My bore diameter is about .384. 7 groove right hand twist.

Yes, 38-55. Brass is plentiful and easy to load. Huge bullet mold options. You will like it.

My most accurate 38-55 at 200 yards has a 19 twist barrel. And it also knocks rams down at 500 meters.

You need a bullet of a certain length to match your rifle barrel's twist.
The gyroscopic spin (Sg) has to be at least 1.4 to ensure the bullet has enough spin to keep it from tumbling.

For .38 caliber bullets with a 17:1 twist using Buffalo Arms bullets:

JIM376330M3 Sg=1.38 1.375" long
JIM376335 Sg=1.82 1.255" long
JIM376360M1 Sg=1.27
JIM376360M2 Sg=1.26
JIM376360M3 Sg=1.24
JIM376360M4 Sg=1.27

Which means you can only use bullets shorter than 1.370".

Thanks Westerner and SD. That was what I was looking for. I have enough silhouette rifles and this barrel is really heavy so I'm thinking bench gun and 200 yards. Wasn't sure what to expect with the slow twist and BP velocities but y'all answered my concerns, 38-55 it will be. Probably go with a Dual Diameter Paper Patch as I'm having good luck with them in .40 and .45

Thanks

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

1:17" was very common for factory barrels, but most custom makers like Schoyen, Pope, etc. made their .38-55 barrels with a 1:15" twist. I have a couple Schoyen Ballards that are both .38-55 and 15" twist.
I'd still choose the .38-55 as it's a great cartridge, and both cases, and dies are available easier than some obsolete cartridge choices are.
