.22 Long Rifle Bullet

In the Riflemans Guide To Rimfire Ammunition, the author mentions a gas check on the lead bullet.  This is the narrow band just in front of the case mouth with a very narrow deep groove just in front of band.   I have noticed this on the bullet before, but this is the first time I have seen it identified as a gas check.  Observing fired slugs, this groove is completly closed.  Just wondering how the narrow band/groove would check the gas?  The heel on these bullets is shaped nearly like a sphere with hollow in center...even with very soft lead it is amazing how they swage up to full bore dia. with the tiny powder charge.

On page 25 of book, there is photo of base of pulled .22 long rifle bullet.  At very top edge of spherical base, the metal has a deep tapered cavity coming to a sharp edge...where the bullet was crimped into case.  This thin edge, combined with the deep narrow groove to further weaken this area probably expands to fill the grooves a millisecond before the thicker hollow base obturates.
Does anyone know if there are technical write ups on the .22 rimfire ctg.?

I’ll take a look in this book.  It has about 75 pages on 22’s alone, more if you include Magnum and special military cartridges.

It’s a good book for the shelf. It was advertised in the journal.

22 RF is garbage from a technical standpoint. I'm shocked and amazed at how well some of it can perform.

And yet  KissI've found a few combinations for my Anschutz 1411, 2013, and a Lilja barrel on a CMP 541-X ... that well  ... have me wondering ...
