Loading with no neck tension

I tried for a year or two to get a .40-70 SS to shoot a group. It had a Green Mountain barrel. It shot poor groups with every bullet and load combination I tried. Then I got some advice to try NO NECK tension and large pistol primers. The groups immediately were 2" at 100 yards. My .45-70 and .40-65 match loads that shoot around one MOA at 200 yards both have minimal neck tension. I can spin the bullet around in the case. They are loaded to just touch the rifling so I cannot have a gap between wad and bullet. I reload my brass fire formed in the chamber with no other sizing. Does anyone else have the same experience?

It's pretty common in the black powder cartridge world to use no neck tension, or very little.  Most of my rifles like zero neck tension, but some like a very small amount.  When I use neck tension I anneal the brass and use an expander either at the bullet diameter, or 0.001" smaller.  Both approaches can make match winning ammo.

My .40's shoot very well with slip fit DD PP. Find the right combination of bullet diameter and use .0015 thick paper. Once fire formed you will never have to worry about tension and expanding the cases.

I shoot for minimal neck tension with all fixed ammo cast bullet loading. Neck expander buttons are chosen which generate .001" to .002" max neck tension. Bottom line: concentricity trumps all. If a bullet doesn't start straight into the rifling it ain't coming out the other end straight, and however one achieves that is good.

I apologize in advance, but I just can't resist a good setup.

How I deal with neck tension.

Shipping is kind of expensive.  1st class only.

I think that in some towns, if you know the right phone number, you can have a neck-tension remover delivered to your hotel room within the hour. Jack probably wants to hang onto his.

It's good to know that this loading method works well for other people. I use a bore riding bullet with two relieved bands so the bullet is centered in the bore well.

When I’m working in China, there are 2 floors full of them in the building across the street from the company apartment.  Alas, it’s no fairy tale operation… no happy endings. Grin  Just massages.  About $20 gets you 70 minutes of massage.  Very relaxing with no neck tension afterwards.

Here in Nevada you can have either type of 'neck tension' relieved. But a twenty-dollar bill ain't gonna do the trick.  Roll Eyes
