32-40 Rem Hepburn

Is anyone currently shooting this round and if so what are some of your bullet and powder choices? I am currently shooting a 180 gr silhouette and 15 GR of 4198 with dismal results at 100 yards. My Hepburn has a 1 in 10 twist . Really enjoy shooting it just wish my accuracy was better.

Johnny I am shooting this cartridge in a Hepburn Match B.

14gr IMR 4198
156gr Accurate mould

This is not a windbucking load but I have shot it out to my 287 yard target and it is MOA or better with iron sights Rifle is very light with light profile 27” factory barrel.

Have you tried breech seating?  Also, are you seating out to where the bullet is starting to engrave in the lands?  Is the bullet diameter large enough?  No experience with this caliber but my 40 caliber Hepburn shoots every bullet I cast far better breech seated although some shoot excellent seated into the case.  When I started shooting my Hepburn I began casting again after many years and thanks to lots of help from forum members learned that a chamber cast is a shooter's best tool when starting to shoot a new to them rifle.  I found out how long and what diameter my freebore was and also the bore diameter.  I went with Accurate Moulds and had moulds made that matched my barrels with a diameter of slightly larger than freebore diameter and a bore riding nose.  That combination worked in my 38-56 Rolling Block and 30 USA HiWall.  I do still shoot several RCBS 40 caliber bullets in my Hepburn but they shoot better breech seated where my more custom fit bullets for that rifle tend to shoot better seated in the case.  Good luck finding the perfect load.  The Hepburn is my favorite rifle action followed closely by my Rolling Blocks. Johnny my original Hepburn 32-40 Rem is a .308” bore diameter. Is yours?

Yes mine is .308. I shoot a bore riding bullet seated to but not into the lands. Have never tried breech seating. Bought these bullets a couple years ago. They are gas check (it was all he had). Haven't ordered a mold yet. Trying to shoot up what I have on hand.

I have been shooting my Brg BPCR Highwall that
is rebarrelled to the 32-40 Remington ..add "-Hepburn"
if you wish
So far, the fixed cartridge load I developed for
Schuetzen is as follows:
Cases formed from  Remington 303 british brass.
I have a tight neck match chamber so I need to
outside neck turn the formed brass to 0.009" wall thickness.
Load is with WLR priners,
15.5gr IMR 4227
Bullet is Lyman  311299, a nom 200 gr RN gas check bullet.
casting them at 19+1 lead/tin.  Lubed with MTL lube, to include the gas check shank.
Since gas checks are not allowed in Schuetzen,
I am seating the bullets pushing a 0.311x 0.060 LDPE wad
ahead of it into the case neck to a depth such that the drive bands
slightly engrave into the Leade.
I am not winning anything with the rifle so far, but
it does pretty good.
Th 311299 is a long bore ride, short 3 bands sized to 0.308
to allow fit my chamber neck and the groove dia as well.

Is the 311299 mold available? If I can find one I will order it and go from there. I have a full unopened pound of 4227 so sounds like a good place to start. I have got to try breech seating too.

The 311299 bullet is in Lyman's current lineup.
You could likely find one on ebay
or try Graf's, or Midway USA

My 30 caliber bullet is Accurate 31-200L with a body diameter of 0.310 and a bore riding diameter of 0.301 (+0.000/-0.002) and is based on the 311299.  I almost went with the same bullet with a plain base.  I get great groups with 20.0 grains of 4227 in both my 30/40 and 30/40 AI.  I think that the advantage of the Accurate Mould is that you can specify the final dimensions where with a Lyman you get what you get.  Tom

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

My Match B Hepburn isn't the Remington version, it's the .32-40 Marlin & Ballard as marked on it's barrel. It also has a very generous groove diameter at .327" and I shoot it breech seated with my Cleave breech seating tool and a custom Saeco 640 mold that I had opened up to .328" base band to fit my rifle. It weighs 170 grs. and I use 13.2 grs. of 4759.
