Couple of my finds at the CGCA show.
A unique Ballard with 34" half octagon barrel in .45-70 cartridge. I'll be taking the .45-70 barrel off soon and switch it out for a 30" #4 weight full round Schoyen barrel in .40-50SS. Then find a forearm hopefully of the same honey colored English walnut. Receiver already has a hole for a tapered takedown pin like my spare Schoyen barrel has.

Full length Wm. Malcolm 34" scope with correct windage front mount, and elevation rear mount.

Found a sight set for my Remington 37 target rifle too!

Here is that Gibbs with the scope....

Bob, I really enjoyed seeing your table and the rifles you built. I am in aw.
We didn't have a lot of time Friday to talk about the rare Hepburn action and its variations but it was something I would like to learn more about. I did not know about it. Is it in Tom's HEPBURN Book? Fun Stuff!!!

The finds and purchases are amazing. I would encourage anyone who found a new treasure to picture it here so folks ( the ones who didn't go) can see them. What power is the scope? Have never seen one that long before.

I haven't figured out what power the scope is yet? They were made mostly between 2x and 10x, and Wm. Malcolm began building scopes in 1855, and died in 1900. The company was owned by four different others until it closed in 1940.
Malcolm scopes like the one I bought were used on Sharps rifles during the Civil War by the Berdan Sharpshooter unit. I own two short Malcolm scopes that weren't too painful to buy, but long Malcolms generally go more than a good single shot rifle so pretty expensive. This one was a real bargain at less than 1/3rd of any I've ever seen for sale. Nearly broke my arm grabbing for my wallet.

Yes, that is the Gibbs 2000 yard gun, now in Tom’s collection, and I’m now doing some work on.  This is a big gun that the picture does not really show.

The Hepburn Walker Patent guns are in Tom’s book.  The one on my table (the one I copied) and the other, are both shown at the end of the Walker section.

What kind of scope and mounts are on the Gibbs?  The mounts look like Malcolm Type A side mounts but not quite is that a Malcolm scope or maybe a Davidson?

Bruce, I was hoping Tom would jump in on this.

The scope is stamped “Husband & Clarke, Bristol”.  From what I have seen they made microscopes, telescopes and other precision tools in the mid 1800’s.

Here’s a picture of the rear mount.

I don't have the full history yet of the Gibbs/Metford, except that there were two rifles made for 2000-yard target shooting. The other one was in the late Bill Curtis' collection and is now in the British NRA Museum at Bisley, in England. The rifle weighs about 15 pounds, is .50 caliber, and not fitted with iron sights. It has a false muzzle. The load was reported to me as a bullet of 750 gr. and 150 gr. of black powder. I first saw it at a Great Western Show, probably 30 or more years ago. For some reason, unknown to me, the rifle was found to be impractical. More to come, as I find info.

Mr Rowe,

Just a note to thank you for the book that is Hepburn. It has been a long time since I have enjoyed a book as much. So much information and the pictures are beyond description.  Thank you again.

Resp.

Since I have Tom's gun, and with Tom's permission, here are a few pictures of it.

Bob, Is the trigger a single set trigger? It kind of has that appearance. Of course if it is a set trigger that would be somewhat of a change from the typical configuration of 1000 yd match rifles as you know. Anyway just a question, thanks.

It looks like it cleaned up well. Did that take a lot of time?

What is the function of the extra set of holes on the rear scope base plate?  Does it elevate the scope a standard amount (like a "Known Ranger") for adjustments at extra long distances?

It seems like there’s much more really on the other side of the country. I’m jealous!
