Smith And Wesson Single shot pistol rear sight

This may not be appropriate here but I thought I would try anyway.

It is a single shot and made 100 years ago, just not a rifle.  It's a 3rd Model Perfected made late in production, 1924.  There was a small production of this 3rd model of around 7000 total from what I found.

I picked this up at auction a month ago by placing just the opening bid.  Thought I had bought a real lemon when no one else bid.  But, it turns out to be a very nice gun and with a somewhat rare Olympic chamber.  The Olympic chamber was only used in a couple thousands total I'm told.

The problem is, and I did miss this in the auction pictures, the rear sight is missing.

I was talking with another member here about it, because I knew he had a couple, and I got some good info but, thought someone else might help a bit more.

The rear sight sits in a slot with a screw on each side that adjusts the windage.  I am assuming these screws also hold it in place.  I'm wanting to know what it looks like and some measurements if possible.  I should be able to make one at that point.

I'm hoping someone can help with either an actual sight or pictures of one removed.

Here are some picture so you know the gun style I have.
Thanks
Bob

I’ve been on the site but did not find anything that would help.  But, I’m not a member so I may be missing something.

I wonder if a rear sight blade from a more common S&W top break revolver would work? I have a couple of H&R Sportsman revolvers, the rear sight adjusts for windage
in the same way.

I have a friend here in town that has several Smith’s and none of the sight are like this.

I did make some progress on it today before family showed up.

I had some .050 spring steel and measuring the slot I needed .043 so took a piece and ground it to the thickness.

The big question was, how is it held in place?  I decided the only way was a taper, like an upside down triangle.  The two adjusting screws have a point on them, so with a taper like this on the sight, the sight would be pulled down and held tight in place but can still be adjusted for windage.

After I got this figured out, it was confirmed, when the fellow member, with the two guns, sent a picture of his sight apart.  He had not taken it apart before because the blade was stuck in the slot.  The last picture is his sight apart after he tried a bit harder to pull it.

I now have the sight in, and with a notch cut, I can test on a target and adjust accordingly.  Then some contouring and it should work and look good.

Nice job of reverse engineering this, and figuring it out!

There's so many of these old sights out there, and no way to tell what they looked like, and conversely, so many parts no one knows what they fit.

I just put a bunch of odd sight parts into a bag today, and threw it into a drawer of stuff I have to do something with someday.  I have a sight parts organizer, and another part of one that has 100 or more unknown sight parts in it.

There's no good way to find out what they need, or what they are to, without just putting pictures out there and relying on group knowledge.  It's tedious, and not very worthwhile, so I just dig through them now and again when I need something, and sometimes find it.

Glad I could help Bob. Looks like you have it figured it out! I did notice the sight notch is off center, maybe this is to give it more windage adjustment. It could be taken out and turned around if the end screws don’t move it enough. The slot the blade fits in isn’t very wide so the windage movement is limited. I’m assuming the blade is original.

Hi Bob
Is there an elevation adjustment for  the he sight?
Also you may want to try a peep sight apture,  I had a friend who made one and he said that it better than the partrige sight.
Later longdistance1

No elevation adjustment.  Pope rebarrel at least one of these and it has a sight on it with more adjustment.  I think it is thought that he installed it.

Richard, yours is different from what I found in my search, sights are seldom shown very well though, so who knows how many variations there are.

Here is one I found and was basing my decision as to how to make it.

Not a very good blue and will redo it when I’m rust bluing a barrel.  Anyway, at least I have a sight now….put 50 rounds through it this afternoon.  Fun gun!
