Reboring and rifling an original Muzzle-loader

Richmond Auction's just auctioned off quite a few nice original Muzzle loading rifles. Most in good shape but with bad bores went in the $600 neighborhood. With repro's starting at $1500, seems to me I could buy a nice original and have the bore, rebored and rifled and be money ahead on a good shooter. What do you think? Any one doing such work? Yes, one could just re-barrel an original but you loose the "look".

Ditto. I know but one gentleman who ever related a bad experience with him. Guys I shot ML'ers with "back in the day" regularly scarfed up '61 and '63 Springfields with bad bores and had him line the barrels, and a current comrade had a nice re-bore job performed on a vintage muzzle loader by Bobby a couple years ago. Be aware he's getting up in years and it's anybody's guess how long he'll keep at it, although he's training a young person to follow along.

Oregon Barrel Co. also does custom barrels and could probably do a rebore and rifling. Have to call and ask to confirm.

I had an original Ohio percussion rifle, rebored and rifled by Bobby Hoyt back in the 80's. I had it opened up to .40 with a gain twist. Man, that thing would shoot!!!! The squirrels would run and hide when they heard the truck door close!!!. I won many shoots with it. My 13 year old son "split the ball 10 times in a row at one shoot!..GOOD times!!!

Old ... old, old, OLD ...

Gun Digest? Article on 'freshening' a muzzle loader barrel. Late 70's, early 80's?

'Old Yellow Jacket' I think he called it, from the color and figure of the stock.

Cast a lead slug in the muzzle, and chiseled a pocket in it for a cutter to deepen the grooves. Spaced with paper or cellophane shims.

Then clean up the lands. Back and forth until acceptable. And then lap.

Made an impression on a teenager ...
