That's the 4th Edition, first printing Oct. 2010. Sometimes the 3rd Edition is referenced to.

Two pages, (8) bullet examples; (3) RCBS and (3) Lyman molds, all smokeless.

I used that 40% equation to load for my old .40-82, but just for the maximum. Never reached that stage in it because accuracy (what little it had) started to diminish at a lower level. Beyond that I have seldom used 4198 and have two or three pounds of it just sitting around.

I use 27 gns of 2207 (H 4198) in my 40/65 Behind  a Brooks 2 dia goes just on MOA @ 100 yds. Use 1 grn of Dacron as a filler. Cheers Mal in au. Usual BP load was 70 gns Wano P.

May be a silly question but I have asked them before. If I rent  a 40-70 straight reamer what length would I probably get? Have a friend who is building a gun in that caliber. He doesn't want to buy one for just one chamber and doesn't want to wait a lifetime to get it so renting is his hope. Or maybe just maybe someone here would offer up one?

If you look at 4D rental you will find this drawing for their 40-70ss reamer.  I’m pretty sure it’s intend for 405 brass.
I’ve included the 405 specs for convenience.
405 brass is out there but not cheap.

Keep in mind that the .405 Winchester and the 40-70 sharps straight are not that close to being the same case. Early original .405 Winchesters used a larger diameter bullet than the 40-70. If you use a .405 reamer based on the early case, on a modern .400"-.408" barrel, you will end up with a sloppy chamber. The original .405 Winchester case and bullet was based on a .411 groove diameter barrel. Rim dimensions are different too.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I use .405 Win. brass for all of my single shots in .40-70SS and .40-70 Ballard, and they all have groove diameters between .411"-.412" Just shorten them slightly to fit.
