Crimping single shot rifle cartridges

Do you find crimping the bullet in bpc critical? Or would a slip fit suffice as long as the bullet sat firmly on the powder?

It all depends on the results you get with that particular rifle. Some like a crimp Some seated without a crimp and some just pushed into the case.

As stated above every rifle is different so "it depends on what your rifle likes" IMHO. To many variables IE are you shooting pure lead, 1-30, 1-20. Based on your OAL loading does the crimp fall in a lube groove? etc etc. I personally do not crimp. I neck size ID and experiment with neck tension to get to whatever my particular rifle likes best. Mostly that is because I feel it gives me more consistent velocity, and I think a crimp many times stipes lead off the bullet below the crimp. But that's just my opinion and you know what they say about those. Regards, Chris

Thanks Chris and I agree with you there. When it comes to neck tension on a finger seated case, what do you find works best when ordering a mold to fit? +.001 or. 002 thou over the neck ID?

One thing I like about single shots is the longer brass life do to not crimping. I shoot mostly German schuetzens with stop ring bullets, no flare, no crimp.

On the 25-20 SS I load for the most I shoot for (no pun intended) .0015 over neck ID. I wouldn't be opposed to a little more tension but, in that rifle, I shoot 100% lead so I have found more tension in that particular loading starts to deform the nose and base of the bullet. (I use a seating die) I doubt it would be an issue with harder bullets but testing in your rifle is the key I guess.

My opinion only a few good reasons to crimp a cartridge. Magazine rifle, crimp holds them in place during recoil. Jacketed bullets are smooth & hard, crimp holds better than friction fit.

Poor reasons, dies don’t size the brass to fit requiring a crimp. Solved by neck sizing to suit the bullet and chamber. Powder not burning completely, crimp increases pressure & aids combustion, use a different powder or increase charge. Single shot rifle cast bullet properly sized to fit the bore, brass that fits the bullet snug with no distortion no good reason to crimp. Smokeless powder single shot rifle, cast bullet, no reason for it to sit on the powder. Black Powder case full is best.

Besides with the difficulty obtaining brass these days crimping wears it out sooner.
