Scope, 32-20 & RRB #2

I have a nice #2 RRB in 32-20 Win with a 30” barrel.  Unfortunately I have 77 year old eyes.  I’m looking for a period correct type scope that won’t break the bank. I’ve looked at the older Weaver 4 and 6 power scopes but I’m not sure if they would if they would work with the 32-20 and I could find mounts for an octagon barrel.  I’ve always used open sights so a scope is a new venture.  Any suggestions on period type scopes that would work?

In my opinion something like a Unertl Small Game scope would be ideal, and there's one for sale in our classifieds at the moment.

I found a couple of 4x Wollensac scopes on eBay for just over $100 each. They fit on scope blocks that are similar to Lyman/Unertl ones but use a small hole on the left side for the scope screw. Steve Earle blocks have both the cup cutout on the right and the hole on the left.  Mine might be Mossberg as I get the two confused.   Frnkeore on this forum is the ‘expert’ on these. If you're not against drilling and tapping the barrel I think that's your only option for your #2 to mount a scope. Some guys have successfully epoxied bases to barrels, but I've never tried that. A #2 in .32-20 isn't huge recoil, so it might handle it.
I still have decent vision with my 75 year old eyes and use a midrange vernier tang sight, and globe front on my #2 in .32-20. But factory sights were pitiful for any accurate shooting I wanted to do.

A Lyman 438 scope would work for you also. There's a couple of them for sale here in the classifieds.

I tried using epoxy to attach scope blocks to an old Stevens 44 in 25-20 ss. It worked for a while but one  eventually one took a slight side hit and came off. The barrel had as nice brown patina except for where the blocks were attached.

Thanks for the insight.  I have some good options and need to educate myself.  I don’t have a problem drilling and tapping the barrel for mounts.  I looked at the scopes in the want to sell section. One I really liked but out of my price range, the other could work.  Thanks.

Back in 1972, I acquired a Low Wall in .32-20.  The previous owner (an old timer I knew) had installed a cheap scope for .22 rimfires on a mount d & t to the side of the barrel.  Mount held the scope by clamping it between its 2 halves.  Nothing remotely original, but it worked.

I replaced the original screws holding the halves together with longer ones and fitted a Lyman Alaskan.  Worked great!   I now have one heck of a poaching rifle.

I could have written this question myself! I'm in the same boat. I have about 15 #2 RRBs and aging eyes. I've never had a scoped rifle, but have toyed with the idea of adding a scope to one of my #2s. But I know nothing about scopes. I'm watching this discussion closely  Smiley

I have used many scopes on many single shot rifles over the years. My choice overall in your situation for informal target shooting, small game hunting, and just plain fun would be a Lyman Junior Targetspot in 8 or 10 power. On the less expensive side + or - $200 the Lyman 438 is a good choice. Both have Bausch and Lomb lenses and are relatively sturdy. To my eye they look right at home on rifles such as the #2 rolling block.

My RRB #2 in 32-20 sports a 4X Wollensac as well, and serves my 81 year old eyes very well.  The cross hairs are a bit fat but for 50 to 75 yard work they are OK.  My scope sits a little high for the original butt stock, however a short section of foam pipe insulation slips on and off the stock as needed to raise the comb.

I used a Lyman Targetspot scope on my Rolling Block.
Installed taller Unertl scope blocks on the barrel to mount the scope to provide more space for loading the action.
