Remington barrel markings
Apr 7th, 2025 at 5:51pm
Print Post
Bought a Remington rifle this last weekend, when I removed the forearm had stamped on the bottom barrel flat:
ST PG VW ES
Figure ST = Set trigger
PG= Pistol grip
ES= Extra Sight
Any guesses about VW?

Agreed Val! The catch is the rifle is a RB #1 sporter with a straight grip, non set trigger, or extra sight dovetail. It is a 30" barrel half octagon half round, with the octagon portion extending just past the end of the forearm tip. Barrel looks like it's been on the rifle for a while, so maybe "rehomed" at some point. Upside is, I haven't come across many #1 sporters, and the bore is excellent.

I assume the serial number on the barrel doesn't match the lower tang then?
Still any #1 Sporter is worth buying if the price is right, and finding a half octagon barrel, or gun with a half octagon barrel is always nice! Most I own or see are full octagon, and a few full round.

I haven't found a serial number on the barrel or externally on the frame. When I removed the buttstock, there was some numbers on the sides of the tangs, what looked like a SN of 25xx, this has the sliding extractor.

I'd have to check to be sure, but I think all my original #1 Sporters have a sliding extractor. Don't recall if my #1 1/2's do or not?

Serial number should be on the bottom of the barrel flat under the hand guard and on the back of the bottom tang.
What caliber is it?
Where are the patent dates located on the receiver-tang and what is the Remington address on top flat of the barrel?

No visible SN on the bottom of the barrel or end of the long lower grip tang.
Caliber is stamped on the bottom of the barrel in the round part, just in front of the hand guard, " 45 GOV'T".
The address on top of the barrel is" E. Remington & Sons. Ilion.N.Y."
No patent dates visible on the side of the action or on top of the upper grip tang. The action may have been polished in the past and removed the markings, but the finish currently looks like it has aged.

Caliber, contour, and barrel markings are very similar to the barrels from the Remington custom shop in the 1990s.

Another source for a SN is inside the butt plate.
