Hiwall Piercing Primers?

The AW Peterson I just had on the for sale section was returned to me.I went out and fired two shots with an anemic load and Primers were pierced, flat and flowing into the pin hole? I replaced what looked like a good pin and its still doing it.I saw the cases that were returned with the gun showed lots of flow into the primer hole also.
Any ideas? I don't recall this being a problem when I was shooting it

No clue on the piercing, but low pressure loads will often flatten the primers.

The firing pin knocks the case forward, the primer backs out of the primer pocket before the case moves back, and then the case moves back and flattens the primer.  It looks like an excessive pressure, but isn't.  Higher pressures move the case back before the primer backs out, and the primers don't look as flat.

Try a normal load, and see if it pierces.  The primer being blown back into the firing pin by the low pressure load without high pressure to resist the firing pin on the other side might be causing the pin to pierce.

by anemic I meant 20g 4198 with 275g bullet.
I'll look at the breech face closer later to see if there is damage. I just swapped pin rral quick at the range and didn't want to do my shadetree gunsmithing on the bench.

Could the pin be undersized to the firing pin hole?

I'm checking that when I get it on my bench.I shot it quite a bit before my friend took it over with no issues.Maybe he damaged the breech face.

Is the firing pin too long?
Standard protrusion is . 050”-. 060” .
Are you using thinner pistol primers instead of rifle primers?

Being the original firing pin did not do it when I owned it,makes it odd. the new pin i did not check protrusion. They were rifle primers btw.
I've never had a problem using pistol primers In low pressure loads in rifles piercing.

Is the nose of the pin burned?  Also, AA picture of the cases would help.

The older HighWalls had larger diameter firing pins for use with BP.
We modify/update these for smokeless powder by bushing the firing pin hole so the smaller diameter firing pin hole can be drilled.
The newer firing pins are the smaller diameter for use with smokeless powder cartridges.
Using the smaller diameter firing pin in the wider firing pin holes  on an older original 1885 would cause  these problems.
