The 17 twist is the twist used for the 25RF so, I would say it's been rechambered.

For what it is worth the 25-20ss was originally a black powder round. I shoot black in mine with good results I am not sure the same could be said for the WCF bottle neck version. Charlie

The barrel is clearly stamped with Stevens marking and the 25-20 is in the same script marking used by Stevens for barrels in 25-20 SS. I think it is just another not uncommon Stevens screw-up. Stevens made mostly low-end stuff, except for their target arms. Mine is a bare bones 44, not a fancy target job.
I know that Steven-Pope rifles & accessories were different. Were there different assembly lines for 44s depending on Model #?
Now that the .25 air rifles with .251 barrels are somewhat common and .251 swaged & lubed bullets are available, I will have to take the thing for a range outing.

If the 17 twist was used for the RF and as I've heard the .251 was also for the RF then I would have strong suspicions that it began it's life as a RF. My 44 model 45 Range rifle is marked 25-20 and is an SS with a 13 twist .256 barrel and a light Swiss buttplate.
