Repurposed ski box

Have had it for to long, its a wooden box that was designed for waxing cross country skis at races.  So it’s time to put it to something useful.  It has started to become a rifle box.

One side will hold action and one barrel, with sights and loading tools.  The other half will hold 1 or two other barrels, scope and palm rest.

Very nice!
Did the felt have an adhesive backing?
What was your source?  I have a buggered up pistol box I need to repair.
Again, excellent job!
Mike.

Neat! I love fitted cases, and especially those reworked from old cases. Whether they're old gun cases, or something else; they're still cool!

Try Weaver Leather Supply.   Veggie tanned 3/4oz.  It's worked well for me - recovering, bags, sight covers, bench cover, etc.

Very cool. Nice job of work.

For such projects I like to use pool table felt - thicker and more durable than craft store felt.

For the cloth lining, a good bet is to go to a Good Will Store or similar, and shop for a ladies  winter coat.   Enough nice wool cloth to do 2-3 cases for only a few dollars.  I usually get green ones, but one is a nice red.  Beware of some of the wool “felt” cloth that is sold, as it has a salt mordant in the dye that will rust your gun in short order.  I’ve covered a few with leather, but often just use it for ends or corners.  Sew the leather to the wood case before installing the lining, which comes last.

One can make a nice case from 1” wood (3/4” pine) with 1/4" plywood for the panels, then saw it in “half”.  This method of construction keeps the weight down.  For heavily-used cases, I usually cover them with heavy cotton canvas, instead of light leather.  A few coats of varnish will protect the canvas from abrasion. Glue-and-screw in the interior partitions, etc., as an early step in the construction.  As a final step, spray the wool lining with “Scotch-Gard”.  Hinges, handles, and hardware are available many places.

Just a thought...

And "Just in case..."

I'd be careful about LONG term storage in that box -- which may not be your intent -- but we don't know how that felt was prepared when it was made.  I've seen some homemade "fitted gun cases" used for long term storage, and due to the felt processing  -- let's just say the results were not pretty after many months.........

For short-term transport to the range, you're probably OK.

Just know that I'm not trying to rain on your parade -- just trying to help you avoid an unforeseen issue if you left the gun in there too long.

Cheers.

The comments about the lining material is good advice.  The other thing that needs caution with, and may be the issue rather than the material, is the glue/adhesive used to attach the fabric. Many have an acid base and if used with be a real problem.  Anymore I don’t even use wood glue to build the wood box but make sure I use non-acid based glue.

I made a case and used regular wood glue and after the gun was in it, just couple days, was starting to rust.

Here’s a bad picture of the offending box.
