Does it make a difference

Recently I went back to a rolling block in 40-50 SBN. Loaded the brass I had formed years ago. Noticed that when I loaded the cartridge powder, 45 grain of cartridge , there were two different levels of fill. Turned out some of the brass is UMC and the rest Starline. Would that make a difference in accuracy?

You can compensate (to a certain extent) by using a filler.  I like amaranth seeds (which can be found in health-food stores or on-line.).   They are hard, spherical seeds about 1 mm diameter, which dispense smoothly in powder measures.  Dump them on top of the charge and compare to your “standard” cases by chronographing.

I prefer Remington ctg cases, as they seem to be uniformly of a heavier construction than most others.

Not on topic of case capacity, but I can corroborate Chris' observation on Remington brass. I was having issues with neck separation with Starline and Winchester 25-20 Win brass used for breech seating.  A case would rarely last 20 shots.  Jerry Hartwig recommended finding some (hard to get) Remington brass and the case issues have gone away.

I haven’t lost all my marbles yet but there is definitely a hole in the bag somewhere.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I’ll just make a few more out of Starline. Never have had a problem with them.

different case volumes will give you slightly different velocitys and that will cause vertical stringing. Always  best to not mix brass if you can. Personaly I use Winchester for my 45-70, rem for my 40-65 and will use Starline for my 44-60. Am thinking of a 40-50 BN, Picked up a set of dies for it at a very good price. Now to pick an action for it.

Another aspect is that different levels of powder compressed to the same level for loading can give different burning results again resulting in possible vertical stringing.

I have built and shot three guns in that round. Latest one is on a Trapdoor. I shoot a 300 gr. RCBS bullet and some 4198 powder. Shoots good with not much recoil. My brass is Winchester. Have never shot black so have no experience there. It is a fun round but takes some work to make it shoot well.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Different case capacities with the same powder charge equal different chamber pressures, thus the different velocities.
Same thing happens with equal charge and case capacity, but different bullet weights. Changing bullet weights will increase or decrease velocity depending on how deep the bullet seats in the case.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I’ll stick with one case manufacturer.
