Niedner barreled rifles while not too common become available at times. Why so few though from his time in Malden, Ma. ?

I asked the same question when I began in Schuetzen. The old timers at that time told me that as far as Schuetzen, Neidner did not make the most accurate barrels like Pope, Zischang, Schoyen, Peterson or Walker.

I don't remember much written about his barrels. Was he more into hi power rifles? Not so much target rifles?

The old timers said the same thing about Winchester barrels. I have a few Winchester barrels that are hard to beat.

Would the later rifles built in Michigan be considered better/more accurate ?

I've only seen 1 Malden single shot a 25/21 on a Stevens 44 action. In Malden it looks like he was doing alot of 1903's, experimenting for himself and Dr. Mann. As for Dowagiac rifles being better we can only guess. I think like Hudson he changed with the times and that is where his work followed. In the 19 yrs he was active in Dowagiac (1920 - 1940) about 1640 rifles were done.

My .22 Ballard, #1540, is extremely accurate. I have rifles with Douglas (14 & 16 Twist), Bartlein, Winchester Model 52, Shilen Ratchet, Eric Johnson, CC Johnson, AW Petersen, and lined barrels with Redman & TJ’s liners. The Neidner is the most accurate out to 200 yds.

.22Hepburn Your Ballard according to M. Petrovs notes was made in 1938. what initals are stamped by the serial # ? I'm courious as to who in the shop did the work. "It was a practice in Dowagiac that the man doing the rifling would also put his name or initial next to the barrel number such as 1348 CB. CB was Carlyn W. Behrman, a very skilled worker who made barrels from 1933 To 1939. Other identification marks seen are OB for Orville Behrman and E. R. Stahl for Elmer Stahl."

I've had two Niedner, Malden rifles and one handgun.   His marking was a stamp on which the point of the "v" in center of the "M" broke off, resulting in what Michael Petrov called a "broken Malden" marking.

A sure sign of getting OLD. I just won an auction for a High Wall with a Niedner barrel in .22 Hornet for less than I've seen bare actions sell for.

Niedner's Malden shop book was with Michael Petrov who passed about 2014. I belive it is now in the ASSRA archives. If you have something for sale post pics and description. I am interested in buying anything by him. I just did a search on Proxibid and found few examples. What surprised me was that Malden Rifles did not show higher $ than Dowagiac rifles. Values have dropped in the last Years greatly. Let me know.    Tim

I have six Niedner rifles and one revolver - only one is from his Malden days. It's a Stevens 44 in 25-21.
