Stevens Ideal Single Shot No. 44

Good evening! I just came across what I believe to be a Stevens 44 single shot rifle, and I'm looking for some information on what I have.  The barrel is 24" long, octagon from the chamber to the end of the forearm, then it's round to the end of the barrel.  The top of the octagon barrel is stamped "J. Stevens A. & T. CO." on the first line, and the second line is stamped (in smaller lettering) "CHICOPEE FALLS MASS.U.S.A. PAT. APR.17.94."  On the left side of the octagon barrel (the first face from the top), the stamping reads "22.L.R."  The rifle's serial number is 24984.  If there are any other markings on the rifle, they're possibly on the barrel under the forearm. I'm hoping someone can help me with some information about this rifle, primarily the year it was manufactured.  Thanks for your help!

Pictures would be good.  There should be markings on the receiver face behind the forearm that would help.  Factory serial number records were destroyed.

I haven’t lost all my marbles yet but there is definitely a hole in the bag somewhere.

Welcome aboard. We had a member here that was collecting data and serial numbers for Stevens model 44's,sadly he passed away last year, known as uscra 112. You might do some searching in the archives, there's quite a bit of info on Stevens 44's.
With the serial number in the 24,xxx range my best guess for the date of manufacture would be 1902-06. A pure guesstimate.

Thank you!  After removing the forearm, there is a "2" stamped on the bottom side of the octagon barrel under the forearm (shown in picture).  Here are links to some pictures (7 photos total) of the rifle.

The "2" is the barrel size/weight, the size normally supplied for the standard basic Model 44, which is what you've got.  In fact, your rifle's only non-standard feature is the rear sight; whether a special order or a replacement, its missing elevator should be an easy replacement.  The rifle appears well-used but not abused, so as long as it's structurally sound, the bore is decent, and the action is tight, it should make a good plinker with standard velocity ammo.  I hope you enjoy it.

The 2 is the barrel size (weight or diameter) 1 being the smallest and 5 being the largest. # 2 was the "standard" size. If you remove the forearm and look at the face of the receiver it should have "44" on it. From the photographs it is a standard model 44 the basic rifle. I have Phil way's tracker and will check if yours is already listed and if not, I will add it. If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me. Chris

Thanks to each of your for your help!  I removed the forearm again and looked at the face of the receiver.  I don't find a "44" marking; rather, I see a small "0" stamped there.  I've attached a link to a picture of it.  Any ideas on this marking?  Thanks again so much for your information on this rifle!

The 44 would be on the opposite edge from the 0 (where the face is dinged up). Might be there under the dings and just hard to see. Not sure anyone knows for sure what the 0 means. I believe it just means a standard model with no extra/special order features. Regards, Chris

Thank you!  Looking at it again, zooming in on the left side of that picture where the face is dinged, you can make out the top portion of the "44" (it looks like two triangles there - I would have never picked up on that marking without you!).  I really appreciate your help - thanks again!
