Making 32 RKS cases from 357 MAX

With the limited information I could find with web searched I trimmed a 357 MAX case to 1.40 and ended up running it as far as possible into a 223 sizing die. It is just starting to roll the case mouth. It is still over 1/4” shy of chambering.  A 32 Miller case fits fine and the diameter just in front of the rim on the MAX case is the same as the Miller.  I have a couple of other sizing dies I could try but I know others have the right steps.
BTW. The link in the cartridge conversion sticky no longer works.

Thanks

Jack

Well, I found a solution that should work.  After trimming and running into the 223 sizing die, I ran the cases part way into a 30 Wesson sizing die then into a .322 32-40 expander die.
If I aneal the cases first I should be able to skip the 223 die as I have been able to size 357 Max to 30 Wesson in one step.  It didn't work with the older fired brass that I had without annealing, but the 3 die steps won't tale that long.
I will be using a single case breech seating for now anyway.

What is a 32RKS? Not familiar with that round. Sounds interesting.

Hey Jack,

I have a .32 Miller short file trim die I used to form the cases for  my RKS chambers. I aneal the max cases and run them into the die, trim to my chamber length and expand the mouth. Eventually I had CH4D make me a 32 RKS form die based on the reamer. Pm me If your interested and I'll search the man cave.

It was a Ron Smith idea and was quite prevalent when the Calgary crowd came to Tommy Mason’s Starts and Stripes range north of Spokane every year.  Basically a longer version of the 32 Miller series. Schuetzendave will have more history.

I am having a BRC barrel chambered for it in a small shank high wall that I picked up here but before I sent the reamer off to be professional done, I decided to use it on a short 33 Miller short barrel from Chuck Bordman’s estate that had had a checkered past. It has been set back so many times by a couple of guys and had never shot well. I had mixed results as well and will try it as a 32 RKS and eventually maybe a 32-40.

Jack. I think I cut A 32-40 die down and then used the 223 Small Base Die, used for Ar-15's or the other way around.....

The 4 cases I made for the barrel that I reamed out from 32 Miller short to 32 RKS fit fine until fired. I eventually had to knock them out with a cleaning rod. I ran them all the way up into a 357 Mag sizing die without a shell holder and will try that next. I will look for a small base 223 die.

A quick eBay search shows the small base dies run $50-$85 each. Maybe a forum member has one they are willing to part with.

Jack after running them through the .223 die the cases you have already previously trimmed will squeeze out longer requiring you to retrim them again to 1.470".

Some .223 dies do not squeeze the web of the .357 Max cases enough - for me the Lee dies needed to be pounded out after the first firing.

Ron Smith adivised me to use RCBS .223 FL dies instead and make sure you bottomed the dies out to the shell holder when FL sizing to properly squeeze the web enough.

Yup worked very well.

We also made ourselves tools to finely bell the mouths for a tighter seal of the .32 RKS cases ( I used the Lee .223 FL die to make my tool since it would not FL size the .32 RKS cases).

I am using the Lee dies Dave,
I will try a RCBS one.  I see you too use the Lee hand press for some jobs.  I like the feel better than a bench mounted one for belling and seating and compressing BP.

I have a number of the Lee hand loading presses.

I have a separate one for the belling tool so I do not have to readjust the depth settings.

I also keep two using a universal decapping die.
Keep one in my shooting box for use at Schuetzen or BPCR matches  and another one at home on the reloading bench.

They are very handy.

I added an arbitrary scale to mine that I use to measure BP compression.

Jack, If you watch eBay you can snag Smallbase 223 RCBS dies pretty cheap, I bought mine new with taper crimp die for under $30. For sizing cases I use the die with a shell holder that I trimmed thinner to work the web a hair further without having to punch them out.

I am picking up a free 222 die today and will see how it works.
Thanks all

I got the 222 Rem die and Mark even cut it down to 1.22" to eliminate the shoulder and neck.  The cases that I had run all the way into a 357 Magnum die with no shell holder would  stick out 3/8" by hand in this new die.  I ran them all in and pounded them out.  Now to shoot them to see how they do.

Thanks

Mark

I just got out a new 357 Max case and using the cut down die only, was able to full length size a case ending up with a .373 base from .375.

Dave,
Your belling die got me thinking, a dangerous thing at times, and I got out the re-decapper that I made which is a copy of the 25 Hornet one I got from Bob Zimmerman's estate and evidently is a Weber design.  I have made a couple and this first aluminum one is now set up with a 357 Mag/max shell holder.  I added a collar that bells the 32 RKS case just enough that it is easy to seat in a high wall but wide enough to seal the chamber.  It is removable so I can make additional ones for other cases if needed.

If you use heavier powder loads you could get carbon streaks on the outside walls and even dimpling of the cases.
With the belled case mouths you stop the dimpling or gas getting around the case mouth causing carboning around the outside wall of the cases.
You do not need to do it every time.
I rebelled the cases after about five firings.
Belling is not required if you keep your loads down to 1,100 fps to 1,400 fps.
For us shooting in the 1,500 fps to 1,600 fps range then belling is highly recommended.

My 32-40 Ballard has a very sloppy chamber and needs cases belled every time to avoid blowback.  My RKS 25 Hornet will dent a case mouth on occasion but belling with a 30 cal bullet on a handle fixes that quickly with no apparent effect on accuracy. I a pushing the 120 gr Paul Jones spitzer at about 1640 fps.  A bit fast but very accurate.
