Pope Automatic Mold

Hello everyone,

I've been working on this project off and on for a while now but finally have one set of handles and a set of molds finished.
This is a reproduction of the Pope Automatic Mold.

The bullet mold I machined for it is 32 cal. I cut the cavity with a form tool, I wasn't happy with how the bullet nose formed up so I made a pin to create a hollow point bullet and also give the mold the auto eject feature.

I am not too crazy about the surface finish on the inside of the mold, so the next molds I make will be lathe bored on my CNC to see if I can get some improvement on surface finish as well as more selection on bullet design. Hoping to get to test the auto eject feature out in the next week or so. However, a fulltime job along with a 2 year old and 3 month old keep a man delightfully busy.
I have other handles that I am working on that aren't spoken for yet . I plan on offering bullet molds for the McLemore reproductions that are floating around out there as well as creating more reproduction molds like this one. Really just depends on interest I receive. Please feel free to shares thoughts and opinions. Thanks!

Beautiful work, and a very nice copy of Pope's mold! I've only seen them in pictures as they're very rare. I own some double cutoff Pope molds, and they cast great bullets.

I'd be interested in one in .38-55 for a 300 grain .384" bullet, especially if it was a stepped mold with that base band, and smaller forward bands.

So readers can see the quality of Jason's mold & handles, here is a McLemore "Pope" Universal mold for comparison. The cavity in these handles does not have the "auto eject" feature although cast bullets drop from this mold with the slightest tap. Many, if not most of McLemore's mold cavities were nose pour and machined for auto eject.
Several years ago I had the loan of an original Pope Universal mold. Once I got the hang of using it, that mold was about as close to a good time as you could have casting bullets. It is not a mold for beginning bullet casters IMO. If you read Pope's original instructions on how to use this mold, your casting sessions will go quite well and you will likely be amazed at how your casting rate increases.
I will be great to have mold cavities available for these universal handles again, especially since those cavities should fit the originals, McLemore and Janson's  Smiley

Add this info to my posting.

Jason, Nice work! This is more like the Pope's traditional mold that didn't have the kick feature. I could never understand why someone has not done what you are doing before. One set of handles and as many dies as you want makes sense. Do you have any idea of die prices? Keep me posted Tom

Jason B seems to have stirred up some renewed interest in "Pope" Universal bullet molds. In an effort to continue the discussion, below is a page from Jim McLemore's universal molds catalog giving Pope's original instructions on how to use the Universal molds. Due to the file size limitations of the forum, on the following post is page two of those instructions. Hope you find them worthwhile or at least interesting.
