BPCR Shooting Sticks

I'm finishing up making a set of shooting sticks for .22 BPCR. I made some leather sleeves to slide over the upper ends and when I laced them I was not careful and ended up with about a foot extra on each tag end. I'm curious as to whether or not there is a good reason not to trim these tag ends short. Anyone have any input?

I'm not familiar with the term "tag end".  Are you referring to the left over length of the lacing?

Yes. I laced with a criss-cross pattern then tied a knot at each end to prevent the laces from pulling back through. I'm debating whether or not to trim the excess.

I can't think of any reason not to trim them.

They're too short to serve as pull ropes so I think I'll leave enough to retie the knots if necessary and trim the rest.

I decided to not cut them off just yet. I looped them under the cross of the sticks and tied them. They will serve as retainers to prevent the pads from sliding off the top of the sticks and getting lost. I still need to apply a finish on the raw oak.

Wouldn't you know. I made this set from some material I had that was about 43 inches long. I sit fairly tall on a bucket and these ended up a little short. So, I re-cut another set that is plenty long. I may still cut slots in place of the holes just to make fine adjustments easier.
