Charlie Dell’s book(s) have

20/1 at 7.9 BHN, and 30/1 at 6.7 BHN

Roto Metals lists their 30-1 as being about 9 and 20-1 at about 10

Since the Brinell hardness is so sensitive to component purity, it’s really important, if you are going to rely on it, to measure it directly.  Making it up from recipes is NOT reliable, as can be deduced from the data offered.   Not that hard to build a tester, using a weight and a compound lever.

Over the years, I've found the SAECO Hardness Tester with this chart to give reliable readings. I have also checked this approach against a Brinell Hardness Tester at work and the drawing pencil method. They all concur within a few decimal points.

In all cases, this is as much art as science. With the SAECO, be sure the point is testing against a broad flat surface even if you have to file the bullet's point down. With the lead pencils, be sure the pencil has a very sharp point for repeatable results.

Finally the SAECO Hardness Tester after four decades froze at a 5.3 reading. When I sent it in for repair, SAECO sent me a new one as a replacement.

I use both Saeco and cabin tree lead hardness testers. I sent the Saeco tester back for recalibration and now find that testing results are always within a few decimal points of each other. If I were to only have one tester it would be the cabin tree. Its much easier to use plus you can use it to test all sorts of odd shaped pieces of lead alloy. To acquire a cabin tree tester you have to join Desperado Cowboy Bullets.
