	IIRC, I was loading .45-90 with 75 gr Swiss 1 1/2 on top of 5 gr 4227. As I recall, idea was that is 1 grain of 4117 adds the equivalent of 3 grains of black. (this is intended to invoke (provoke) some discussion around the practice of these two powders (and nothing provokes discussion more than disagreement on a forum )

	I've never really trusted Smokey the Bear. Everytime I see him I wonder what happened to the Boy Scout that was orginally wearing that hat.

	remember the case capacity of the 40/50 is low try about half that used in a 45/70 load maybe 3 grains?? art

	You can't get 90 grains of black in a solid head case so the 75 gr of black and 5 gr of 4227 was an attempt to duplicate the full house load in the .45-90. So, if 1 gr of 4227 is equivalent to 5 gr of black, for .40-50, you could use 30 gr of black on top of 2 gr of 4227. The above assumes that my memory of the ratio of 4227 to black is correct, something that I will be verify with the Russ Hooks, the guy I got that info from several years ago. I'll be in touch.

	My memory was not correct. 1 grain of 4227 is equivalent to 3 grains of black. So 75 gr Swiss 1 1/2 and 5 gr of IMR 4227. That was a nice, clean-shooting load combination in my .45-90 and I was ringing the white buffalo silhouette at Raton pretty reliably.

	Today I took some of the information from the replies and went to the range. Shooting a Remington rolling block, single set trigger, 40-50 SBN, I tried various 260 grain bullets over 3 gr of 4227 and 50 gr of goex #2F. 100 yards. Quite good. My goal is to get a load for 200 meters. So question. Do you recommend putting a thin piece of paper wad over the 4227 followed by the black powder? I just poured it in. Thanks
