The price of powder today.

I was cleaning up my office/loading room.  The top of my large gun safe is decorated with several old containers of powder.  One is an empty bright-red metal Hercules brand 12lb Red Dot container.  It’s marked $22.50.  The date code indicates it was manufactured in1968.  I just checked the price of Red Dot today (now made by Alliant).  It’s no longer available in 12lbs, but 1lb is $45 & 8lbs is going for about $300.  Therefore, 12lbs would be about $450.

$22.50 in 1968 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $205 today.  So, the price of powder, at least Red Dot, has far outpaced the purchasing power by more than a factor of two, in this case 119.5%.

Without doing research, I bet powder isn’t the only thing.

Date Code of 1968?

What is the Lot number?

I have an old 3# can lot #999.

I could not find any Date stamps on the can.

Cheers,

Dave

Thanks, Wayne.

So my can is after 1968 and before cardboard tubs.

Starting to narrow it down.

I had a friend at Vista and they have no records for powders of that era.

Cheers,

Dave
