I've wondered why anyone ordered a rifle chambered in the .38-50 Remington today? Is it simply because the .30-40 Krag and .303 British brass is so common and cheap to buy?

Val I've found Krag brass easy enough if you are patient.  I have a lifetime supply which took a few months to find.  It's pretty easy to fit 8-10gr more Swiss 1.5 into the 38-50 case over the 38-55, if it's based on the 30-40 case instead of the shorter  303 Brit brass.

My understanding the is that BPCR silhouette shooters like the .38-50 Rem-Hep because it has more case capacity than the .38-55. A heavier bullet can be launched at greater velocity than the .38-55 plus it has better knock-down power on the Rams.
Being made from .30-40 and/or .303 brass it an additional plus.
I have a VERY heavy BR rifle with a .38-50 chamber that is every bit as accurate as any .38-55 I've ever come across shooting black and duplex loads. Smiley

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

Thanks Randy.
With smokeless powders I wouldn't have thought the extra case capacity would matter.
