A favorite Ballard

Won a butt stock on ebay. The stock is just what I was looking for for this old Ballard. Rifle has a #4 Winchester 38-55 barrel. Took me about four hours to inlet the stock to the action. There was quite a difference in the angles of the tangs/stocks. When the stock touched the bottom of the action, there was a 1/8 inch gap at the top.

I was watching that auction if its the one that ended a week or so ago. Condition looked nice with what looked like a reddish stain on it? Sure looks great on that rifle!

The mystery lever. No one knows who made them. There are other examples out there. Ron Long thought so much of them he made them from scratch and had one on his own Ballard rifle. This one is the only one I've ever seen with wood panels.

Yes, that's the one. I knew it would look right on my rifle. Buying old stocks is a gamble but this one worked out just fine. Perty sure someone slathered varnish on it but I'll leave it just the way it is.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

It's a shooter. Used it exclusively one shooting season. Used it at Spokane, Glasgow, Hamilton and others. Won matches with it from the bench and standing. That was when it had the goofy composite Berg stock. Was so weird had to raise the front sight a half inch. With the new stock  it holds real nice with the front sight down where it belongs. Weighs 13 pounds 4 ounces.
