I am always interested in Niedner items. While looking for more info I came across a Niedner Ballard. My questions :
serial # 1558 1/2 why the 1/2
Niedner Proof but date from M. Petrov info 1939 mfr date
proof started after T. Shelhamer injury 1940
when did Niedner Corp. quit making rifles
no initials for barrel maker

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Just a guess, but maybe he made a pair of rifles, and used 1558 and 1558 1/2 for the customer?

I'll bet he discovered he duplicated the number when he started to make his journal entry and rather than a crude overstrike, just added the 1/2 and recorded it.
It looks like it took 85 years for anyone to notice.  He probably thought those numbers would never mean anything to anyone but himself.

Will try to post some pics. I shoot the rifle in 22BPCR silhouette matches and 200 yd target matches and it is surprisingly accurate.
