Hopkins & Allen 922

Greetings members, am a long time member but just getting back.
Just found a Hopkins & Allen 922 in back of gun safe that I bought 30 years ago. I always wanted a Savage Favorite but this appears to be of superior design. The finger Lever Spring is missing or broken because the lever will not stay retracted. The two places that list parts for the 922 have the spring listed but out of stock.
would desperately like a replacement spring or dimension of original so I could practice the art of leaf spring making.
Thank You.

Have you taken the finger lever off to see if the spring is truly broken?  Might just be assembled wrong.  The spring is pretty danged strong, and it would take some serious abuse to break it.  The finger lever on the H&A 922 is really, really difficult to install correctly, and stupid easy to assemble wrong.  When assembled right, the finger lever will snap open and closed.  Without the spring pushing against it, it will just limp noodle open/closed.

I haven't broke it down yet, waiting for arrival of some 1075 steel and measurements of spring.
Thanks for your comments.

Hi John,
I made some of those springs a few years back. I used 1095 and copied a broken spring someone on this forum loaned me. I have one spring left, a two-piece forming die and some rough notes of the steps and set-up. Also have one spring and some spring stock (.062x5/8 1095). If you want, I will loan you the spring, dies and notes and give you enough stock to make a few. Just cover the postage ($11.00 SFRB) and return when done.

The spring is made to have an over center feature at the end of the lever throw. Gives it a "kicking extractor" effect. This is why the tail end of spring has the sharp end, the over center is on the angle formed by that cut.

If your action has the 7 o'clock extractor there is a notch for that. The 6 o'clock one doesn't need it if I remember correctly. I have an old picture I will try to attach, gives you an idea of the configuration.

The springs I made were quite strong, I think the material was a lot better than the OEM one. I found thinning them on a belt sander helped a lot. You can see the one in the photo has raised up at each end on the tight bend. At a minimum, that will need to be sanded off.
