I have one sharps 45-70 that likes 5744.  I lightly crimp with bullet touching lands.  525 postell with 23g powder.  I'm sure you know that 5744 is not position sensitive and should not have any over powder wadding of any kind.  I've heard of damaged barrels from such practice.   Good luck.
