A very nice jesture

I have posted before of trying to help a friends widow sell her late husbands estate. She invited myself and my wife out to dinner today at a local eatery where she and her husband ate out many times. Matter of fact it was this same place we ate at as a group for the last time before her husband died. We finished our meal and we walked her to her car about to leave. She said wait I have something for you and opened the trunk of her car bringing out a gun case. She said "I want you to have this" and opened the case. Inside was an immaculate 1894 Marlin lever gun in 38 WCF. She said you have always liked this gun when we would do the gun shows. He never sold it and I guess she held it back when we started selling the guns. Anyway she gave it to me for helping along with a sealed envelope that I am pretty sure contains some money. I tried to get her to take it back but she insisted. I have not and will not open it. I will attempt to give it back again later. I made a promise and I have tried to keep it while not taking anything in return except maybe some gas money going to the gun shows. Yes a very nice jesture indeed...

Well done. It's never an easy task, but knowing you're helping a friend makes it worthwhile.
As for giving any money back I think that might not be a good idea. She's also trying to do the right thing and might be hurt by your refusal to accept a gift for the help she much appreciates.
I've done this on three occasions for friend's widows and tried to not accept payment and on a couple occasions it caused more anguish to the widow when I turned down their gifts. I eventually gave in to make them happy.

This is a commentary on our 'band of brothers'.

As long as one cowhand is herding one long or shorthorn,
it ain't dead.

The same holds true for old timers with even older single shot rifles. The same close agreements with trust and a handshake. Wink
