Factory Engraved Low wall

Am looking at a Low wall, that has quite nice engraving on the action and barrel, the engraving is not ostentatious but has about 20% coverage on the action, and around the fore sight. I also collect old Colts, and with them I can (slowly) get authentication letters of how they left the factory, is this possible with old Winchesters ? As always thanks in advance, david a.

Yes, you can get a factory letter for most Winchesters but it takes a little while. There's a gent over at Winchester Collectors Asso. named Bert Hartman that with the serial number can sometimes give you some quick information about the rifle.

You could try the Cody firearms museum and get either a serial number search or a letter. A letter may take a month, but a serial number search normally is one or two days. The serial number search will normally list everything the factory had on the rifle, assuming it’s an old Winchester. I don’t recall the cost of a serial number search if you’re not a member.

I also think if you pay for a serial number search and then decide to get a letter they credit the payment towards the cost of a letter, so you're not paying twice. It's a good way to see if the letter lists what your gun is before deciding to get a hard copy letter. Some special features are occasionally missing, even though they may be original to the firearm.

I did a quick on line search and discovered that this rifle #118xxx was built between 1913 when records stopped and 1923 when they re-commenced, the vendor says it was factory engraved so if I get it will get a letter as I do with my Colts. Its in 25/20 WCF which will compliment the 25/20SS ones I have. Thanks for all the feedback, d.

If it's built within the range when records stopped then there's no record to check how it left the factory. Just going to have to look very close at the engraving and decide if you think it's real and worth the price.
This quote from the Winchester Collectors forum:

"The factory warehouse ledger records end at serial number 109999 (July 1910).  The Polishing Room serialization records end at 115308 (May 1914)."

So yours being above the 115308 wont get any info at all.
