.310 Cadet with Speer .32 HBWC

Print Post
I recently purchased a .310 Cadet and the chamber cast showed a full length .32/20 case, with the rim thinned to 0.050" and the shoulder removed with a .30 Carbine die, would fit just to the origin of the rifling. The bore dia. is 0.314" and the groove dia. is 0.321". I had the idea to use the Speer .32 HBWC, seated out as a bore rider, expecting the hollow base to bump up to fill the grooves like a Minie ball.

Then I got concerned with the bullet separating, leaving the skirt in the bore, which is reported to happen in revolvers. The rifle has a smooth run from case to muzzle, unlike all the possible drag issues on the bullet skirt caused by a revolver.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks

A dear friend of mine, tried WC in a 30/30 Ruger and was only able to shoot shot gun type patterns at 100 with them.

With your chamber (30 Carb neck, .3386 dia) you should be able to use regular 321/322 cal bullets, using thin 32/20 brass. You may have to turn the necks a little to shoot fixed.

What is the twist rate?

Well, I need to check that.  The rifle is original, with the bore excellent and the metal in unissued condition.  The wood on the other hand, has been beat up.  I'll raise the dents, but wanted to get it shooting first.

Arsenal molds make a mold thats a copy of the original cadet pattern bullet.Thats what Iv'e been using in mine. The skirts on hbwc's seperate from being pushed to fast not the cylinder gap.

I just checked and the twist rate is about 1-20, which is what I have read is standard.

That twist, in .321 diameter, will stabilize a .88 long bullet, with a .180 meplat.

If you want to breech seat it, have it made with a .322 base band, about .120 long and then 3 driving bands that are .050/.06 wide, .320, .318, .316 and the back end of the nose, at .314. It should be easy to seat it, with though dimensions.

For fixed I'd do the last 2 bands at .322, the 3rd band at .318 and the same size nose.

Accurate could do either mold.
